Triple win for Preston companies in NFRC Awards

Preston has scored a triple win in the National Federation of Roofing Contractors (NFRC) Awards after the roof installation at The Flower Bowl won the ‘Green Roof’ category. The project used roofing systems from Preston-based roofing manufacturer, Sika Liquid Plastics and was carried out by Preston-based roofing contractor, W Hughes & Son.

The prestigious award is a second roofing industry accolade for The Flower Bowl, after the project was named Liquid Roofing Project of the Year in a Buried Application in the Liquid Roofing & Waterproofing Association (LRWA) Awards late last year. It highlights the collaborative relationship between the client, the roofing system manufacturer and the contractor, which has led to the installation of a striking curved green roof with a guaranteed 25-year service life.

Guy Topping from The Flower Bowl commented: “From the outset we were keen to use a local supply chain to deliver the vision of a building that’s in tune with its semi-rural surroundings.

“The building has been designed to echo the rolling hills of the Lancashire landscape and, thanks to the roofing system supplied by Sika Liquid Plastics, expertly installed by the W Hughes & Son team, we have successfully achieved that vision. Once the grass on the roof has matured, we even hope to be able to graze sheep up there, which I’m sure will be a first for a leisure attraction!”

The project utilised Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decotherm insulation, which was mechanically fixed to the profiled metal roof deck, following the contours for the hill-shaped roof. Sika Liquid Plastics’ Decothane Root-Resistant system was then used to provide a robust waterproof surface, which is compatible with a green roof build-up and provides the ideal solution for The Flower Bowl.

Sam Kidd, Area Technical Manager from Sika Liquid Plastics added: “This is a stunning development and a great addition to leisure facilities in Lancashire and the curved green roof ensures that it looks distinctive and offers visitors a unique experience.

“Our involvement was to provide a robust and high performance roofing system that will ensure the building looks great and performs well for decades to come and we’re delighted that the project has been recognised once again in a prestigious industry award programme.”
