How to Retain Top Skilled Employees

An often overlooked element of long-term business success is keeping hold of your top-skilled employees. Retaining your top performers will ensure that you perform to a high level each day and will prevent you from having to go through the recruitment process often, which can be disruptive and expensive. So, what can you do to prevent the loss of highly skilled workers?

Update the Work Model

You want to keep hold of your top performers, but you will need to make changes to the work model to keep them happy. Studies show that flexible work policies are popular and rigid policies are one of the main reasons that so many people are resigning right now. Therefore, you want to provide options beyond 9-5 and consider a hybrid work model that can provide the best of both worlds for your employees.

Communication & Collaboration

To keep employees happy, it is important that there is strong communication throughout the business and the opportunity to collaborate. When communication is strong within a business, it creates trust, strengthens relationships and improves morale. Collaboration across departments can also break down barriers and give employee’s a better understanding of the big picture and what their role is within the entire organisation (this should help them to feel valued).

Provide Opportunities for Development

It is important to recognise that the top-skilled employees will also be the ones that are the most ambitious. This means that they could start to look elsewhere if there is no room for career progression within your business, so you need to invest in career growth to increase employee loyalty. This can include training to ensure that they are proficient with your systems and enhancing your human resource management systems by providing developmental and training tools. You should also promote from within so that staff can progress their career at your business.

Equip Employees Properly

You also need to ensure that your staff are equipped properly so that they can work to their potential each day. You should be providing them with high-quality equipment, such as ergonomic chairs, high-quality laptops/computers, the latest software and headsets. You can also offer benefits, perks and discounts to keep them happy (and always ensure that you are offering competitive wages).

Establish Feedback Loops

Everyone benefits from feedback and this should go both ways. You should provide regular and genuine feedback to your staff to show your appreciation and so that they can improve in their role, but you should also provide platforms so that staff can give their own feedback and share thoughts, ideas and concerns that they have.

These are a few of the most effective ways to retain your top-skilled employees and to keep them happy. When you are able to do this, it will benefit everyone within the organisation and should help you to achieve long-term success.
