Fresh findings from Medicash reveal that adults under 45 are leading the way in skin health awareness, even as many continue to indulge in tanning habits despite potential risks.
The survey, conducted by OnePoll for Medicash and based on responses from 2,000 UK adults, shows that Gen Z and Millennials (aged 18-44) are the most proactive generation when it comes to monitoring and protecting their skin.
Respondents in this age group expressed the greatest concern about developing skin cancer, the highest reported use of sun safety practices like SPF and shade-seeking, and the strongest confidence (48%) in identifying suspicious moles compared with older generations.
Two in five younger adults said they examine their skin at least once a month, compared with just three in ten people over 45. They also show a greater appetite for information about skin health, with 31% preferring online resources and 25% relying on social media for guidance.
Industry specialists suggest that the rise of “skinfluencers,” the booming skincare market, and beauty trends like the “clean aesthetic” – which celebrates fresh, natural-looking skin – are influencing this generational shift towards greater skin health awareness.
Despite their caution, younger adults are also the most likely to intentionally tan. The research shows that 55% of those aged 18-44 actively tan in the sun, on sunbeds, or both, compared with just 28% of those aged over 45.
To aid early detection, Medicash provides its policyholders with free access to SkinVision, a CE-certified app powered by AI and dermatologist expertise. Users can photograph a mole or skin spot and receive a quick risk assessment, supporting fast action when concerns arise.
Andrew Healy MBE, CEO of Medicash, said: “It’s encouraging to see younger people embracing skin health checks and sun protection, but there’s still work to do when it comes to reducing risky tanning habits. Our partnership with SkinVision ensures policyholders have instant, expert-backed tools at their fingertips – helping them take action quickly and potentially saving lives.”
Since launching the partnership in summer 2020, SkinVision has facilitated over 255,000 skin scans for Medicash policyholders and helped identify nearly 1,400 clinically validated cases of skin cancer.
Melanie’s story illustrates this impact. After spotting changes in a mole on her shin, she used the SkinVision app provided through her Medicash plan and received a high-risk assessment. Acting on its advice, she saw her GP, was referred to a dermatologist, and diagnosed with stage 1 melanoma. Her prompt action resulted in successful early treatment.
Erik de Heus, CEO of SkinVision, added: “Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, but also one of the most treatable when caught early. Through our partnership with Medicash, we’ve been able to help thousands of people take control of their skin health, supporting early detection that often leads to less complex treatments and reduces the pressure on healthcare professionals in these busy times.”
“Melanie’s story is a powerful reminder of how quick action and accessible technology can make all the difference.”
