Chemical industry expert retires after 15 years with CBA

The Chemical Business Association (CBA), based in Crewe, Cheshire, has announced that Michael Cooper has retired after more than four decades in the industry, fifteen of which was spent at the association.

Cooper, who lives in Sandbach, Cheshire, graduated in Chemistry in 1978 and spent his entire career in the chemical sector. He joined the CBA in 2007, making his mark as the association’s Responsible Care Coordinator.

During his 15-year tenure he built an enviable reputation within the industry due to his passion for supporting members with Responsible Care-related queries and for sharing his knowledge during his Introductory and Advanced Responsible Care Workshops.

Cooper served as Secretary to the CBA’s Responsible Care Committee since 2007 and facilitated and administrated the association’s Responsible Care Awards. More recently he also served as Secretary to the Health, Safety & Environment Committee, focusing specifically on environmental aspects.

Additionally, Cooper was an integral part of the CBA’s Technical Team, where he advised members on issues such as import and export, Brexit, packaging waste, plastic packaging tax, emergency response, Health & Safety, as well as a broad spectrum of regulatory topics. He also represented CBA at the Chemical Industry Liaison Group, run by the Environment Agency, and was part of the Chemical Stakeholder Forum, run by DEFRA.

Furthermore, Cooper was instrumental in Carechem since 2008 and was involved in the Safety & Quality Assessment System (SQAS) and the European Single Assessment Document (ESAD) since 2009, in recent years taking the lead on these.

“Michael has been an integral part of the CBA team for many years, and we will miss his positive attitude and commitment to both the association and our members. We thank him for his years of dedicated service, and wish him all the best for his retirement,” says Tim Doggett, CEO of the CBA.
