Burnley striker ‘going to be okay’ after hospitalisation with head injury which knocked him out during match

The father of Burnley striker Michael Mellon says the loanee is “going to be okay” after being discharged from hospital following a head injury which knocked him out while playing for Scottish Premiership club Dundee on Sunday.

Mellon was left unconscious by a clash of heads with St Johnstone captain Liam Gordon in an incident which Dark Blues manager Tony Docherty called “almost life-endangering” while accusing referee David Munro of reacting too slowly.

“He’s okay,” said Mellon, who played for Burnley between 1999 and 2001 and now manages Oldham Athletic, speaking to the Lancashire Telegraph.

“He’s had a sore one. But Dundee have been fantastic in the way they have dealt with him in a very difficult moment for me and his mother. He’s going to be okay.”

The 20-year-old was taken for emergency treatment at a local hospital with what Dundee described as a “significant head injury”.

“Following specialist investigations, he was discharged with appropriate head injury advice,” the club said, praising the response of medical staff.

“He will continue his recovery under the supervision of the club’s medical team in accordance with concussion protocols.

“The club is writing to the Scottish FA in the strongest terms to express its serious concerns that play was not stopped to allow immediate attention to Michael after what was clearly a dreadful head clash.”

Michael Mellon injury: ‘Speedy recovery’

Posting on social media on the evening of the match, Mellon’s brother, Jordan, said his sibling would “be sound”.

“I would like to thank the Dundee medical staff for their instinctive reactions to enter the field of play to attend to my little brother, Michael, today,” he wrote. “He is in hospital and already on track to making a speedy recovery.”

Mellon scored once and provided two assists on his Dundee debut against Livingston on January 27.

The Scotland under-21 international netted 15 times in 26 appearances for League Two side Morecambe earlier this season, including a hat-trick against AFC Wimbledon in October.
