Glaston install Energy Efficient Compressor at Manchester’s Duerr’s Jam Factory

Duerr & Sons Ltd is an independent British manufacturer of jam, marmalade, peanut butter and preserves based in Wythenshawe, Manchester. Since 1881, Duerr’s has been producing some of the nation’s favourite jams and spreads.

The business, started by Mary Duerr making jam in her own kitchen as husband Frederick sold the jars to the local Co-op, now employs 240 people and turns over £60m a year.

Currently in its fifth generation of family management, Duerr’s remains a family run business, supplying products under the Duerr’s label, and under own brand labels for food retailers in the UK.

All operations including the 150,000 jars of peanut butter that roll off the production line every day are now run from sites on Roundthorn Industrial Estate, Wythenshawe, Manchester.

Duerr’s operates in a highly competitive, high turnover market place.  Its impressive production capabilities relies heavily on many contributing factors; the most important one being, the smooth and efficient operation of machinery on a day to day basis, to enable it to achieve the ever increasing production demands.   David Crain, Chief Engineer at Duerr’s approached Glaston as he wanted to invest in new compressed air equipment.  Glaston recommended the HPC KAESER BSD75 SFC variable speed compressor, ultra-high efficiency refrigerant dryer and high efficiency inline filtration.  Due to an increase in production demand a larger compressor, dryer and filters were required to maximise efficiency.

This compressor pushes the boundaries of compressed air efficiency as it delivers more compressed air for less power consumption, whilst combining ease of use and maintenance with exceptional versatility and an environmentally responsible design.

This variable speed compressor saves money in multiple ways: the compressor air ends are equipped with flow-optimised SIGMA PROFILE rotors and are controlled and monitored via the industrial PC-based SIGMA CONTROL 2 compressor controller.  This enables free air delivery to be precisely matched to meet actual compressed air demand and ensures maximum energy efficiency.  Lastly the use of super premium efficiency IE4 motors boots energy efficiency even further.

HPC KAESER compressors are known worldwide as a class leading, low specific energy consumption compressor, which ensures the lowest possible operating cost. (The lower the specific power the better the MPG of the compressor).  The HPC Kaeser compressor systems are renowned throughout the industry for their reliability and resilience. Quiet in operation and low in maintenance costs they are designed to operate at full load 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Terry Corringham, Area Sales Manager at Glaston comments “The HPC KAESER range of compressors are state of the art and the most energy efficient equipment money can buy. Although not the cheapest in today’s market when bench marked against competitors, they will repay the initial investment with year on year running cost savings over the compressor life.”

Mr Crain commented, “Glaston delivered a first-class service with their knowledge and expertise.  We look forward to our current compressor providing a long and efficient life, and look forward to working with Glaston for the foreseeable future.”
