Blackburn’s Fire Garden Distinctly Different start to Christmas

Organisers of Blackburn’s annual Christmas Lights Switch On event have received outstanding feedback for their decision to do something distinctly different.

Blackburn BID took the decision to change the traditional 2 hour stage show format. They commissioned internationally acclaimed, outdoor arts company Walk the Plank to come up with something new to fit the new Blackburn and to attract a wider, family audience.

Thousands of visitors enjoyed a spectacular 2 hour Fire Garden installation outside Blackburn Cathedral. There was also a pop up street feast on King William Street offering mulled wine, bratwurst and a range of hot and cold food. Crowds enjoyed thrilling stage production outside the town using an aerial performer who was suspended high above the crowds with pyrotechnics and a stunning firework display, that drew audible gasps from the crowd.

Harriet Roberts, Blackburn BID Manager, said: “The feedback online and in conversation on the night and since, has been resoundingly positive. It was a gamble changing such an important milestone celebration in the town centre and I’m delighted that we have pulled it off.”

The next big Christmas events in Blackburn are the Party on the Market and Street Feast on Saturday 9th December and Community Carols, with the Festival of Light and Lantern Parade on Saturday 16th December.

Some of the comments received online from visitors to the event include:

Betty Ashby from Blackburn said: “Brilliant night thanks Blackburn BID. I will look forward to 16th December.”

Lynda Dawson from Bamber Bridge said, “Super, very entertaining, the fire garden was brilliant. Well organised and plenty of safety practices in place. Well done team.”

Louise Ashton from Darwen commented: “A magical walk through the Cathedral grounds. Very enchanting. Loved it! Thumbs up to Blackburn for bringing something different to town.”

Christopher Booth from Blackburn added: “Wonderful event. The grandchildren loved it!”
