Blackpool-based The Barking Bakery, a leading specialist pet treat manufacturer, has now decided that 2021 is the time to build on its fledgling export business, based on the recent unexpected surge in demand for its canine treats in the UK, due to the demand for pets during Covid.
Commented Michelle Turnbull, Owner and Managing Director: “Since the business relocated to the Blackpool Enterprise Zone in 2019, we have already beaten our sales and growth expectations, as well as increasing our manufacturing capacity. As a result, we are looking to employ another four members of staff, taking our employees to 20 and grow our sales in Europe.
“We have a dedicated plan to take our doggy treats to international success, since now is the perfect time, with most countries in Europe experiencing a puppy-buying boom, a positive impact from the Covid pandemic. In the UK alone, this has seen over 2.2 million pooches being purchased.
“Even though the business was only founded in 2012, we have already started to export to The Netherlands and Ireland and with a greater focus on exporting, we will be talking to our clients who have overseas retail outlets to see if they will display our products.
“Furthermore, in association with Petquip, the UK’s international trade association for manufacturers and suppliers of pet care goods and services, we hope to be attending our first foreign pet treat industry trade exhibition in Nuremberg in hopefully June 2021. However, this is Covid regulations permitting.
“Our future is bright and we are barking excited to continue its development and expansion into Europe.”
