What are the benefits of integrating sports within your business?

Business leaders are continually finding new and innovative ways to boost employee morale and productivity. An increasingly popular, yet unconventional way to facilitate this is to incorporate sports and its associated values into the work culture.

Sports and exercise are incredibly important for people of all ages. They can bring about significant mental, physical and developmental benefits. In this article, we discover how and why you might want to start integrating it into your workplace.

How can you integrate sport into a business environment?

While you might not want to organise a mid-week volleyball match in your office (or maybe you do), sports can be incorporated around daily working patterns and processes.

During work times, recreational equipment in the office can provide an exciting activity for employees to engage with at lunch or break times. This could be table tennis, table football or a darts board for people to show their competitive side.

Team building exercises can also be a good opportunity to integrate sports, providing a unique twist to the usual problem-solving challenges and quizzes.

Organising sports and activities for people to get involved in outside of work is another way to reap the benefits without having to adapt or change the workplace. Weekly 5-a-side football tournaments or bowling nights can be a lot of fun and don’t take too much setting up. You never know who might bring out their inner Mo Salah and shock the whole office.

What are the benefits?

There are numerous advantages to introducing sports in your working environment. The mental and physical benefits of being more active are widely supported by research. This can only have positive ramifications for your employees’ wellbeing and output.

Sports can help a workforce come together through cooperation and teamwork. Communication is vital and developing these skills outside of a workplace scenario can be very effective. Games may just be the key to unlocking new levels of performance and chemistry in your team.

Incorporating a sense of competition in the workplace can boost job performance too. Research suggests that competition increases motivation for some individuals and that this can lead to higher levels of productivity and quality of output. Everyone may not thrive in competitive environments, but sports can bring an element of fun to increase employee morale across the board.
