Touring Welfare Bus Provides On-Site Health Checks for Construction Workers

Construction company McLaughlin & Harvey has collaborated with Roadshow Promotions to launch a touring welfare bus aimed at delivering essential health checks to their employees directly at construction sites. This innovative initiative offers convenience to their workforce by facilitating vital health assessments on-site, ensuring early detection of potential health issues.

As part of their “You Matter” initiative, McLaughlin & Harvey partnered with Roadshow Promotions, the UK’s leading provider of promotional buses. This campaign encourages employees to prioritise their health and well-being, encouraging them to “Get on Board” for health assessments. At the heart of this partnership is a medically-equipped double-decker bus staffed by healthcare professionals who provide on-site health checks and advice to colleagues.

During a two-week tour, the health bus visited McLaughlin & Harvey’s major construction sites across the country, commencing in Bristol and including locations such as Farnborough Airport, BMW Oxford, BAE in Govan, and the Eden Campus in London. Hundreds of colleagues received health assessments during this period.

Each visitor to the bus underwent health checks conducted by nurse practitioners, covering key metrics such as height, weight, and BMI measurements. They also received assessments of blood pressure, blood sugar levels, body fat percentage, and metabolic rate. The health practitioners were available for in-depth discussions about cholesterol and diabetes, and colleagues had the option of a quick 10-minute back massage from the on-board masseuse.

Alastair Lambe, Group SHEQ Director, highlighted the importance of this health examination, describing it as an “MOT for our staff.” It helps identify and address potential health concerns such as diabetes and cholesterol. Lambe noted that during welfare tours like this, a few colleagues might be flagged for further testing or specialist consultations, ensuring that any potential health issues are promptly identified for early intervention and appropriate treatment.

McLaughlin & Harvey, celebrating 170 years in business in 2023, is a well-established civil engineering construction company involved in various high-profile projects across the UK. Their investment in a touring health bus demonstrates their commitment to prioritising employee well-being and making health checks as accessible as possible. The “You Matter” initiative has garnered a positive response within the company, particularly among staff members working away from home.

Natasha Greenley, Director of Roadshow Promotions, praised McLaughlin & Harvey’s dedication to employee health and welfare, emphasising that by bringing health checks directly to their workers, they eliminate potential barriers to healthcare access while promoting a culture of well-being among the workforce.

The touring welfare bus represents an innovative and proactive approach to prioritising the health and well-being of colleagues, setting a commendable example within the construction industry.
