Next Bayern Munich manager: Kompany ‘holds talks’ over leaving Burnley for Bundesliga – report

Burnley boss Vincent Kompany has held talks with Bayern Munich over becoming the German club’s new manager, according to a report.

Uefa Champions League semi-finalists Bayern are seeking a successor to Thomas Tuchel and have failed to secure high-profile targets including Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann and Austria’s Ralf Rangnick.

The former Hamburg defender speaks German and has entered initial negotiations over the vacancy, BBC Sport has said, although the outlet added that the level of progress made between the parties is unclear.

Bayern held unproductive talks with Tuchel last week about staying despite the 50-year-old initially announcing his exit in February.

Kompany made a sensational start to his first managerial role in England, guiding Burnley – who he joined from Anderlecht, where he began his coaching career – to the 2022/23 Championship title.

The Clarets were in the Premier League bottom three throughout 2023/24, although a late improvement in form meant their relegation was only confirmed after the penultimate match of the season.

Kompany to Bayern: Burnley to lose boss?

A four-time Premier League winner as a player for Manchester City, Kompany spoke of his ambition for Burnley to return to the top flight after they finished the season with a 2-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

“We have a really strong squad – not quite ready for the Premier League yet, I’ll be honest,” said the 38-year-old, who signed a new five-year deal at Burnley in May 2023.

“But Championship-wise, it’s a very, very exciting squad and hopefully they can get back to the Premier League.

“You saw Forest celebrating there at the end on our pitch and we don’t take anything for granted.

“The Championship is very tough but hopefully it’s us celebrating on the pitch on the final day next season.”

Bayern’s 33 domestic titles make them the most successful team in German history but they were comfortably eclipsed by Alonso’s unbeaten Leverkusen in 2023/24, finishing 18 points behind the champions in third.
