A Ray of Hope – Christmas Lunches Bringing Communities Together

In a world often filled with disconnection, Dr Salman Shahid and his team provide a remarkable example of kindness and dedication to community service.

The initiative began during the COVID-19 pandemic when Dr Shahid, a GP in Middleton, personally delivered Christmas hampers to vulnerable individuals, the elderly, and those mourning the loss of loved ones. This heartfelt act of compassion received widespread national recognition on social media platforms, including the BBC.

Building on this success, Dr Shahid founded Healing Humanity International, a charity devoted to supporting the elderly, lonely, and isolated, as well as individuals and families facing financial hardship. The organisation collaborates with local food banks and provides aid to homeless individuals, addressing the pressing issue of poverty.

Since 2022, the charity has been hosting annual Christmas lunches for people grappling with loneliness, isolation, and disabilities. These events, organised by mobilising local resources, offer attendees not only a warm meal but also an opportunity to connect with others and build a sense of belonging.

This year, Dr Shahid and his team, led by Jackie McCann, worked alongside volunteers to serve nutritious and delicious meals. The inclusive atmosphere created during these gatherings allowed participants to share stories, laughter, and companionship. These events left attendees with a renewed sense of hope and community spirit.

Dr Shahid’s efforts go far beyond Christmas. His partnerships with Middleton and Rochdale food banks provide ongoing support to homeless and food-insecure individuals. Through regular food drives and fundraising efforts, he ensures these organisations have the resources needed to sustain their vital work. His commitment has garnered strong community backing, turning seasonal generosity into a continuous campaign of care.

As a respected figure in Middleton, Dr Shahid has inspired numerous volunteers and donors. His leadership highlights the importance of collective action in addressing the challenges faced by vulnerable populations. He also advocates for mental health support within the community, emphasising the importance of connection and inclusion.

The Christmas lunches have made a significant impact, with attendees sharing how these events have helped them overcome feelings of loss and isolation. Many have built new friendships and found solace in these gatherings.

As this tradition continues, Dr Shahid and his team remain dedicated to fostering connection and care. His efforts exemplify the power of compassion and community, making him a true pillar of hope in Middleton.
