Road improvement works to start in Nelson

People are advised to start planning their journeys ahead of work starting on Nelson town centre’s new accessibility scheme next Tuesday.

Following the completion of utilities work in the area, the start date has been confirmed for the first phase of the project being delivered through the Accessible Nelson programme, which aims to improve travel in and around the town centre.

Construction work is due to start at Netherfield Road near the petrol station to install a pedestrian crossing and widen pavements to make walking and cycling journeys easier and safer.

Four-way traffic lights will be in place at the mini roundabout during this stage of work, which is expected to take approximately five weeks to complete.

Once complete, the work location will move to Sagar Street, between Netherfield Rd and Broadway.

During the next stage of work a temporary southbound closure is planned for Sagar Street with traffic diversions in place.

Sagar Street will remain open for northbound traffic during construction, and access will be maintained to the McDonalds restaurant. Special access will also be maintained to the police station and the delivery bays of Pendle Rise shopping centre.

The work is being planned to manage the impact it will have on motorists and will be delivered in stages to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Drivers are being advised to allow extra time when travelling in the area as journeys may take longer than usual and some delays are expected.

Phillip Spurr, Pendle Borough Council’s director of place, said: “We are delighted work is finally going to start on this improvement work.

“Obviously there will be some disruption and we are grateful for everyone’s patience and support as we look at the bigger picture of what it will be like when work is finished and what it will mean for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists in Nelson.”

The improvements are being paid for through the UK Government’s Active Travel 4 funding. This first phase of work is one of seven projects being delivered through the Accessible Nelson programme by Pendle Borough Council, Lancashire County Council and the Nelson Town Deal Board.
