RIPON, UK, July 9, 2026 – Ripon is preparing for a day of celebration on Saturday 1 August 2026, when the city’s historic St Wilfrid’s Procession will be joined by a programme of free entertainment to mark Yorkshire Day. Residents and visitors can enjoy activities from lunchtime through to the evening, combining one of Ripon’s oldest traditions with a wider community festival.
Entertainment in the Market Place will begin at 12pm, before the popular St Wilfrid’s Procession arrives at approximately 1.30pm. Celebrations will continue throughout the afternoon and evening, concluding with the traditional Hornblowing ceremony at 9pm.
The procession will once again fill the streets with colourful costumes, music, community organisations and familiar characters, showcasing Ripon’s rich heritage and celebrating the city’s longstanding connection with St Wilfrid.
Alongside the procession, this year’s programme will feature two larger rides aimed at older children and teenagers, together with popular attractions including stilt walkers, face painting and free rides for younger children. Every activity is free to enjoy, ensuring the event is accessible to families and visitors of all ages.
Antony Prince, Chair of St Wilfrid’s Procession, said: “St Wilfrid’s Procession is one of Ripon’s most treasured traditions, but this year we have a chance to make the day even more special by celebrating Yorkshire Day at the same time.
“With the support of Ripon City Council and Ripon BID, we are extending the day to create a brilliant free family event that brings people into the heart of the city and shows Ripon at its very best.
“Our ambition is simple. We want Ripon to be the jewel in Yorkshire’s crown. From the fantastic procession in the afternoon to the special Hornblowing ceremony at 9pm, this will be a full day of history, entertainment, community and Yorkshire pride.
“We are also extremely grateful to our business sponsors, public donors and the army of volunteers who make this event possible. St Wilfrid’s Procession is run by volunteers from the community, for the community, and their support enables us to keep this ancient Ripon tradition alive for future generations.”
Everyone is invited to spend the day in Ripon, take part in the free entertainment, support local businesses and experience one of the city’s best-loved annual events, celebrating both St Wilfrid’s Procession and Yorkshire Day.
