How to Become Lancashire’s Best Singing Voice

The eagerly anticipated second edition of Lancashire Choir of the Year is ongoing and waiting for its winners to be announced. This popular competition invites choristers to step into the spotlight, recording their mesmerising performances on video in pursuit of a coveted spot in the grand finals.

How to prepare

Preparing for a singing competition requires careful planning, practice, and confidence-building techniques. An important step is seeking professional guidance from a vocal coach or singing teacher. They will bring you a wealth of knowledge, technical expertise, and personalised guidance to help you address vocal challenges, and refine your performance.

Nowadays, there are many options available, including in-person lessons and online singing classes from various experienced teachers, such as the ones from Pirate.com. Catering to both novice and proficient singers, these one-on-one singing sessions deliver tailored guidance to elevate vocal abilities. The classes are flexible and convenient and cover a range of essential skills, including writing lyrics, breathwork and performance.

Another great piece of advice that can take you a step closer to the finals in the Lancashire Choir of the Year competition is recording yourself during practice sessions and performances. Recording and self-evaluating your singing practices and performances can serve as a powerful tool in your journey to prepare for a singing competition. This deliberate practice allows you to take a closer look at your vocal execution, identify areas for improvement, and cultivate a deeper understanding of your strengths and weaknesses.

Last, but not least, choosing the right song is paramount, as mentioned by Open Mic. Careful consideration and strategic selection can highlight your vocal strengths, evoke powerful emotions, and leave a lasting impression on judges and audiences alike. Remember to also consider the competition’s theme, genre, and guidelines while making your selection.

About the competition

Having made its debut in 2022, Lancashire Choir of the Year stands as a celebration of vocal artistry for people in Lancashire, Blackpool, and Blackburn with Darwen Choirs from diverse backgrounds, whether from communities, workplaces, or schools, are encouraged to unite and showcase their passion for singing. The competition’s inclusivity extends a warm welcome to individuals of all singing capabilities as well, ranging from baritones to sopranos.

Guided by a distinguished panel of singing experts and overseen by Lancashire County Councillor  Phillippa Williamson, the videos will undergo meticulous evaluation to determine the deserving victors. These triumphant contenders will advance to the electrifying live final scheduled for the week commencing November 20, 2023, just before Lancashire Day (November 27). This exhilarating final will once again be masterfully hosted by professional vocalist, Tim Uffindell.

As the competition approaches its climax, the finalists will grace the stage with live performances, and the panel will unveil the ultimate champion. Prizes for the runner-up positions and an esteemed ‘People’s Choice’ award will also be unveiled, painting a portrait of Lancashire’s thriving choral landscape.

Preparing for a singing competition demands dedication, discipline, and a genuine love for music. By preparing in advance and trusting your unique voice and personality, you will be well-equipped to captivate the judges, leave a lasting impression, and hopefully become the winner of Lancashire Choir of the Year competition.
