Vincent Kompany: Bayern ‘close in’ on Burnley manager as JJ Watt posts cryptic social media message

Burnley part-owner JJ Watt has posted a cryptic message on social media amid reports suggesting Bayern Munich are closing in on appointing Clarets head coach Vincent Kompany as their new manager.

Kompany has a verbal agreement to join the Uefa Champions League semi-finalists, according to Sky in Germany, via a Sky Sports News story claiming that Bayern have “gathered information” on Mauricio Pochettino but prioritised Kompany.

Writing on X on Wednesday night, former NFL player Watt said: “People often ask if European football ownership helps fill the adrenaline void from playing… there are definitely days.”

The deal has reportedly not been concluded because the clubs are negotiating a settlement.

Former Manchester City captain Kompany signed a new five-year deal at Burnley in May 2023.

The 38-year-old is said to be set to take his backroom staff with him to Munich, including former Wales striker Craig Bellamy.

Kompany speaks German and played for Hamburg in the Bundesliga between 2006 and 2008.

Next Bayern manager

Bayern held unproductive talks with Tuchel last week about staying despite the 50-year-old initially announcing his exit in February.

Kompany made a sensational start to his first managerial role in England, guiding Burnley – who he joined from Anderlecht, where he began his coaching career – to the 2022/23 Championship title.

The Clarets were in the Premier League bottom three throughout 2023/24, although a late improvement in form meant their relegation was only confirmed after the penultimate match of the season.

“The Championship is very tough but hopefully it’s us celebrating on the pitch on the final day next season,” Kompany said after Burnley finished the season with a 2-1 home defeat to Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

Bayern’s 33 domestic titles make them the most successful team in German history but they were comfortably eclipsed by Alonso’s unbeaten Leverkusen in 2023/24, finishing 18 points behind the champions in third.
