Asbestos Still the Leading Cause of Workplace Deaths in the UK

Enviro Skip Hire’s recent research reveals that asbestos remains the UK’s deadliest workplace hazard.

The study found that 2,268 mesothelioma deaths occurred in 2021, caused by inhalation of asbestos fibres. Additionally, there were 537 deaths in 2021 mentioning asbestosis on the death certificates.

Nurses, builders, and teachers are 3 to 5 times more likely to develop mesothelioma compared to the general population. This highlights the critical need for professional asbestos removal practices.

James Rubin, Director of Enviro Skip Hire, which specialises in asbestos removal across the UK, commented on the findings. He said: “The asbestos workplace statistics are concerning. There are many different types of asbestos, and it has been widely used in construction. Asbestos is highly toxic to human health. Problems arise once the material becomes airborne.

“Since asbestos is present in many common areas around workplaces, such as roofing and plumbing, it also poses a risk to the structure if disturbed. If it gets damaged and ends up in a pipe, substantial renovation might be necessary.”

Mr Rubin added: “As a company, we’re often asked ‘Why is asbestos removal so important?’

“Asbestos should only be removed if necessary. It should be done only when absolutely needed, such as during renovations of a house or office, or if it has been unintentionally disturbed. If asbestos in a building hasn’t been disturbed, it shouldn’t be touched; there’s no need for unnecessary disturbance.

“However, once it has been disturbed, it needs to be removed immediately by certified contractors under specific, qualifying circumstances.

“UK Governments previously provided grants to help workplaces with asbestos removal, but this ended in 2018. If asbestos-related workplace deaths continue to rise, it’s an initiative the Government should consider reinstating.”
